On Saturday May 26, 2007, Bertha Beatrice Woodland departed this life at Fort Washington Hospital.
Bertha was born on March 20, 1908, the only child of the late Dabney and Laura Allen. At a very early age Bertha accepted Christ and joined The First Baptist Church in Goochland County, Virginia. She attended the Monroe School in Richmond, Virginia. In 1932, she moved to Washington, DC and joined Mount Airy Baptist Church, and in 1939 she moved to Indian Head, Maryland, where she joined Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. In 1942, Bertha met and married James Edward Woodland (now deceased) and continued her membership at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, working with the Pastor=s Aid Society and performing other duties as assigned for the benefit of the church community. She was one of the oldest members of the church. As a result of her longstanding commitment to the church, Bertha was honored in 1986 with an award for her persistence, enthusiasm, endurance and love for the upbuilding and edification of the church. Bertha enjoyed cooking, sewing, and entertaining family and friends. She is survived by three stepchildren, Thomas Sylvester and Joseph Sidney Woodland (Gladys) and Thelma Regina Taylor; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2007, 9:00a.m.at Thornton Funeral Home Chapel, Rt. 227 Pomonkey, Maryland. Interment Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Marbury, Maryland.
