Jane Griffin Henderson, 88 of La Plata, Md. passed away on July 27, 2011 surrounded by loved ones at the St. Mary's Hospice House after a courageous battle with cancer.

Jane leaves behind her 4 children Joyce Sams, Duke Henderson and his wife Tessa Echols, George, and Nick. 4 Grandchildren Jeff, Lydia, George and Lynzi, 5 Great grandchildren Tiffany, Amanda, Cory, Abby, and Thomas. 2 Great-great Grandchildren Chase and Colton and devoted friend and bridge player Charlie Tansil.

Jane was born to prominent family in Union, Mississippi on July 16, 1923 and was the youngest of 8 children. Due to the untimely death of her parents she was raised in the Meridian Masonic Home from a very young age. She studied photography in college until she married the late Adam Byrd Henderson.

They decided to settle in Accokeek Maryland on a farm directly across from Mt. Vernon in the mid 1940's to raise a family. Jane was always active in the community helping to start a nursery school, forming a garden club and helping the less fortunate. She also worked as a Realtor in the late fifties and sixties helping people find the home of their dreams.

Jane and her family moved to Charlotte Hall in 1960 where she continued her community outreach and became a dedicated Hospice Volunteer for many years. She also worked for her son Duke as an administrator from 1979 to 1989 at Mr. Tire.

Jane moved to the Maples community in La Plata during 1999 and became very involved with the Clark Senior Center. She kept fit at the Charles County Community College swimming pool where she enjoyed water aerobics. Traveling the world, gardening, bridge, square dancing were some of her varied interest. Bridge with her friends was a very important part of her life and as Jane would say it keeps your brain active and your mind fit for duty.

A memorial service will be held at 12 noon on August 8th 2011 at the American Legion in La Plata, Md.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jane's memory to Hospice of St. Mary's P.O. Box 625 Leonardtown, Md. 20650.
