James Elmer Greenwell, 97, of Hollywood, MD died in Charlotte Hall Veterans Home on Friday evening, September 24, 2010. Born on January 12, 1913 in Hollywood, MD he was the son of the late Valley I. Greenwell and Blanche E. Jones Greenwell.

He was the loving husband of 53 years to the former Clara Turner Ward whom he married in December of 1957.

Mr. Greenwell is also survived by his three stepchildren; Dorothy J. Vranish and husband John Michael of Crofton, MD, Herman R. Ward and wife Judy of Hughesville, MD, and Martha A. Waltman of Riva, MD as well as his 5 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Mr. Greenwell is survived by his siblings; Mrs. Mary E. Mckenny, Mrs. Agnes C. Poe, Mrs. Dorothy R. Sickle, Mrs. Margaret A. Wilson and Mr. Kenneth D. Greenwell.

He was preceded in death by his three siblings; Chester H. Greenwell, Ignatius V. Greenwell and Evelyn E. Muzzuco. Mr. Greenwell was educated in the public school system in Hollywood, MD.

He served in the United States Army from April 1942 until October 1945. He attained the rank of Cpl during World War II and served in Tunisia, Sicily, Naples, Foggia, Rome, Southern France, Rhineland, Central Europe and North Africa. He was employed as a bus driver by WM&A Transit, which later in his career became Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (METRO) of Washington, DC from which he retired in 1975.

Mr. Greenwell resided in his home in Hollywood from the time of his retirement until his illness in 2009. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Hollywood, MD and was a lifetime member of the American Legion.

The family will receive friends on Monday, September 27, 2010 from 5:00-8:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home Chapel, Leonardtown, MD with prayers being said at 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at 10:00 AM in St. John's Catholic Church, Hollywood, MD with Fr. Raymond Schmidt officiating. Interment will follow in Charles Memorial Gardens, Leonardtown, MD.
