Dewey W. Richardson, Sr. of Port Tobacco, MD, died September 17, 2010, at Southern Maryland Hospital Center, Clinton, MD. He was 90 years old.
Born on December 3, 1919 in Waurika, Jefferson County, OK, he was the son of the late John H. Richardson and the late Lou Ella Fortner Richardson. Mr. Richardson retired from the Library of Congress as a senior lieutenant in the police force on March 19, 1975. He was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard retiring as a Senior Chief Boatswain's Mate on July 1, 1962, after 20 years of service. Dewey was a member of the First Baptist Church of Waldorf since 1971 serving as a deacon and chairman of the Benevolence Fund. He taught Sunday School and prepared children for baptism. He was an avid golfer at the White Plains Golf Course where he was senior club champion seven times. His greatest joy in recent years was spending time with his three great-grandchildren. He was affectionately known as "Papa Dewey" to all who knew and loved him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his late wife Maxine; brothers, Claude, Kendrick, Jake, Jessie and sisters, Annie, Lizzie, Hazel, Lela, Dora, and Fannie. He is survived by his wife, Alma O. Richardson; daughter, Bonnie Faye Grimes and her husband John of Pomfret, MD; his son, Robert Ray Richardson and his wife, Patricia of Mechanicsville, MD. Also survived by grandchildren Victoria Zanardi and her husband Steve, Tina Anders and her husband Ron, Megan McDowell and her husband Jude, and Robert W. Richardson and his wife Laura and great-grandchildren Grayson, Ruby and Lily. Also survived by his stepchildren Jimmy, Ray, Lorene and Tye. Visitation on Friday, September 24, 2010, from 10:00-12:00 with a funeral service directly following at First Baptist Church of Waldorf, 10045 Bunker Hill Drive, Waldorf, MD 20603-3809. Dr. Wayne Kempson, Pastor, will be officiating. Interment will take place after the funeral service at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Waldorf, MD.
