Dr. Elvear B. Johnson, 69, of Port Tobacco a retired Administrator with the Charles County Maryland Public Schools died Sunday, August 8, 2010 at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC following a stroke.
Dr. Johnson was born March 21, 1941 in Baltimore, Maryland. She was one of four children born to Evelyn and Anthony Allen II. Elvear graduated from Frederick Douglass High School as Salutatorian of the Class of 1957. Her undergraduate studies were at Howard University where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1961 with a major in chemistry. It was at Howard University where she joined her beloved Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She received a Master of Arts in public administration in 1975 from the University of Northern Colorado and a Master of Education in guidance and counseling from the University of Maryland in 1981. In 2002, she received a Doctor of Philosophy from George Mason University. Dr. Johnson's diverse professional career mirrors her many travels in the US and abroad. She worked as a radiopharmacist at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore followed by several years as a chemist with Tildons Yates Pharmaceticals in Worcester, Massachusetts. Dr. Johnson married COL. (RET.) Antione D. Johnson, Ph.D. in 1966. As an Army wife, she lived in Germany, Japan, Thailand, and many states including Arizona, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Texas, Maryland, Massachusetts, and North Carolina. While overseas, she maintained connections to her community through local chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and as an educator and administrator while working in the DoDDS school system. During her career as an educator, she served as a science classroom teacher; guidance counselor; staff developer; area specialist to the school superintendent; and principal at both elementary and high school levels. Upon returning to the Washington, DC metropolitan region in 1982, Prince George's County became her home. During her service with Prince George's County Public Schools, she served as principal of Seabrook Elementary School and Potomac High School. In 2002, she moved to Port Tobacco, Maryland and was Vice-Principal of Dr. Samuel Mudd Elementary School in Waldorf. She retired from the Charles County Public Schools in 2006 after 36 years as an educator and administrator. Dr. Johnson is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Dr. Antione Johnson; her daughter Jocelyn Herrington and son-in-law Mark Herrington of Waldorf, MD; brother Anthony Allen III and sister-in-law Susie Allen of Odenton, MD; brother Lavell Allen and sister-in-law Ann Allen of Washington, DC; brother-in-law Eugene Johnson of Wilmington, DE and a host of loving nieces and nephews. Visitation on Thursday, August 12, 2010 from 5PM to 8PM at the Raymond Funeral Service, P.A. 5635 Washington Avenue La Plata, MD. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, August 13, 2010 beginning at 11:30AM at Christ Episcopal Church 112 East Charles Street La Plata, MD. Interment will be private.
