Charles Woolverton Atlee, Jr. was the first of the twelve children born to the late Charles W. Atlee, Sr. and the late Mable Butts Atlee. Charlie was born August 25, 1914 in Bryan's Road, Maryland. He was called to his eternal home peacefully on Thursday, July 22 at 12:10 p.m. at the Charles County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in La Plata, Maryland.

Charlie was a life-long resident of Charles County and was educated in the Charles County Public School System. On October 12, 1941, he enlisted in the U. S. Army and received an honorable discharge November 5, 1945. When he returned home from the military, he immediately became employed at the Naval Ordnance Station in Indian Head, Maryland. Charlie retired after 39 years at NOS and four months later became employed at the Charles County Board of Education and retired again on March 1, 1981.

He later met and married the love of his life, Dorothy Elizabeth King, they were married on December 4, 1953. They were married 56 years. Charlie was a quiet and gentle man, always ready to lend a helping hand and give advice, especially to young people. He was one of the first black motorcycle riders in the County. He loved taking Dorothy to motorcycle races, stock car races, ball games and on long rides. He also enjoyed cleaning his car, taking care of his yard and watching war movies. His favorite TV program was "The Price is Right". Charlie read the news paper daily, he loved listening to country music and playing his harmonica and accordion. Charlie was an avid Redskin Fan.

In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters.

His love and memories will be cherish by his wife, Dorothy; step daughter, Patricia Young; grandsons, Tyrone Young and Vernell Young (Vera); one great grandson. Patrick Simpson; one brother, Lawrence Atlee; two sisters, Elfreida Lee and LaMay Amiker; Also left to remember his love and cherish his memories is Valeria King Somerville, who was like a daughter to Charlie; and a host of other family and friends.

His Viewing will be held on Friday, July 30, 2010 in the Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, Maryland 20640 from 10:00am until time of Service, 12:00 noon. His Interment will be in Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, Maryland.
