God in his infinite power called James Solomon Brown from labor to reward on Sunday January 28, 2007 at his home in Valley Lee, Maryland. He was born on February 9, 1912 in Drayden, Maryland to the late Arthur and Dora Travers Brown. He was the fifth of nine children and he received his early education at Drayden School.
James was inducted into the United States Army in 1942. He served in War World II and received The Purple Heart for a head injury sustained while serving as engineer in Italy. While in the Army he went to school for Bakers and Cooks at Fort Meade. He was honorably discharged from the military services in 1945. He and his late wife Lillian of 50 years lived in Valley Lee, Maryland on Happyland Road with their children. James worked at St. Mary's City College for 45 years as a Dietician. Among his many achievements he received awards for: Outstanding Support of the Athletic Program at St. Mary's College; Special Recognition as a Senior and Chartered Member of St. Marks Union AME Brotherhood for his Faithful and Loyal Dedication. In March 2002, he received a certificate of appreciation for 50 years of continuous service at the Joseph A. Egans Masonic Lodge #104 P.H.A, in which he was a Charter Master Mason. In addition, he was a loyal member of the Elks Lodge #1120. He had many titles including: Dad, Grand Dad, Grand Pop, Pops, Poppie, Grand Pop Brown, Pop Brown, Brother Brown, Captain Brown, Cousin James, and Mr. James. He was always willing and ready to help anyone who needed him, including but not limited to friends, neighbors, or anyone who may have asked him. As a God fearing man, he rarely missed attending services, alternating between two sister churches: St. Mark and St. Luke, where he was a faithful member of the Senior Choir. As an outdoorsman he enjoyed fishing, gardening, and bird watching. Other favorite past-times included: caring for his long time devoted pet cat 'Frisky", watching all types of sports, listening to Gospel music, reading his Bible, and reminiscing about the "Good old Days" with friends. He is survived by eight children: Jean Lawrence, John Cutchember, Donald Cutchember, Geraldine Gabriel, Marion Quarles, Joyce Brown, Laverne Brown, Charlene Clark, and three grandsons whom he raised as sons Darryl Brown, Maurice and Irving Cutchember; sister Thelma Fenwick, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, grand, great-grand and great-great-grand children. Family will receive friends February 3, 2007: 8:45a.m. -10:45a.m. and service will begin at 11:00a.m. at St. Mark UAME Church, Valley Lee, Maryland, officiating Pastor Rev. Rudy C. Brooks.
