Samuel Phillips "Phil" Frere of Bel Alton, Maryland, died on Thursday, May 6, 2010 at Civista Medical Center in La Plata, Maryland. He was 86 years old.
Born on August 6, 1923 in Thompkinsville, Maryland, he was the son of the late Mary Phyllis Mudd Frere and the late John Edward Frere. Mr. Frere was a building inspector for the Charles County Government for 20 years. He was a founding father and a 48 year plus member of the Bel Alton Volunteer Fire Department where he served for many years as Treasurer. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Archbishop Neale Council. In his early years, he worked as a bookkeeper for Fort Belvoir Engineering. He was a co-owner of the first self serve grocery store in Charles County ( Bel Alton Supermarket). He was a past bookkeeper for Middleton and Higdon Electric. He was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Chapel Point. He loved gardening. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death his brothers Robert Frere, John Edward Frere, Will Joseph Frere, and James Merrick Frere and his sister Marian L. Frere. Survived by his wife, Doris A. Frere; his daughter Phyllis Frere; his sister Marie C. Martin; brothers Charles Richard (Charlotte) Frere of Bel Alton, MD, Francis Barrow (Jeanne) Frere of Ashland, VA and Edward Mudd (Carol Ann) Frere of Thompkinsville, MD. Visitation on Monday, May 10, 2010 from 2-4 and 6-8PM with Prayer Services beginning at 7PM at the Raymond Funeral Service, P.A. 5635 Washington Avenue La Plata, Maryland 20646. Mass of Christian Burial to be offered on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church Chapel Point at 10AM. Interment Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be members of the Bel Alton Volunteer Fire Department. Arrangements provided by Raymond Funeral Service. |
