Lt. William James Kay, Ret., Maryland State Police, 82, of Waldorf, MD, died March 3, 2010, at his residence with Hospice.

Mr. Kay was in the U.S. Navy during World War II, worked for Capitol Transit in Washington, DC, and joined the Maryland State Police in 1959, spending 12 years at Barrack "H" Waldorf as detective. Lt. William J. Kay became Barrack Commander at Barrack "L" in Forestville, retiring from that position in 1986. Mr. and Mrs. Kay operated Kay's Catering in Maryland until 1996. Bill's hobbies were playing the guitar, country music, and cheering on the Washington Redskins. He has faithfully served the Lord as Deacon with over 25 years of service in Southern Baptist churches in Maryland, especially First Baptist Church of St. Charles.

Born October 6, 1927, in Hollister, NC, he was the son of the late Richard W. Kay and Anne Jane Parker Kay.

Predeceased by his parents; sisters, Catherine Lewter and Margaret Way of Fredericksburg, VA; and Jean Thomas of Richmond, VA.

Survived by his wife of 24 years, Sheila Kay; daughters, Cheryl and her husband Buddy Buracker of Harpers Ferry, WV; Denise Kay of Lancaster, PA; Donna and her husband Joe Paschutti of Southington, CT; step-daughters, Jeneene Foster of Waldorf, MD; Cathy Kenny of Upper Marlboro, MD; Jodie Crabill of Mechanicsville, MD; step-son, Jeffrey Crabill of La Plata, MD; and brother, John Kay of Roanoke Rapids, NC. Also survived by ten grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation will be Friday, March 5, 2010, at First Baptist Church of St. Charles, 136 Stoddert Avenue, Waldorf, MD 20602 from 12 Noon until time of service at 1 PM.

Interment will be Friday, March 5, 2010, at Trinity Memorial Gardens, Waldorf, MD.

Pallbearers will be the Maryland State Police Honor Guard.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Brian Greene, Chris Buracker, Joe Paschutti, Buddy Buracker, Mike Kenny, and Mike Brunicardi.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Charles County, PO Box 1703, La Plata, MD 20646.
