Charles Arthur "Arky" Whittington, age 77, of Dunkirk, MD died February 24, 2010 at Washington Hospital Center. He was born June 2, 1932 to Clifton O. and Virginia E. (Brady) Whittington on the family's Yellow Bank Farm in Dunkirk, MD. He was educated in Calvert County and graduated from Calvert High School.
He was married to June K. Barbehenn. Arky was a life long farmer as well as a sales representative for Pioneer Seed, and a school bus driver. He played baseball for many years and was a member of the 1965 Maryland State Championship team. Arky also coached Big Girls and Women's softball for many years, resulting in State and Regional Championships. Upon his retirement from coaching in 1992, he was presented with a permanent plaque, located at Dunkirk District Park, for his 25 years of service and dedication to the sport of softball. His other enjoyments were waterfowl hunting, blue grass music, watching the Baltimore Orioles and Jeopardy, fox hunting and field trials. Mr. Whittington was a member of Smithville United Methodist Church, Calvert County Farm Bureau and ASCS. He was preceded in death by his father Clifton O. Whittington, Sr. and a sister, Beverly Leitch. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, June K. Whittington, his mother Virginia E. Whittington, both of Dunkirk, daughters Sharon Sauvé and her husband Dave of Dunkirk, Deborah Kopack and her husband Frank of Annapolis, Lucy Jackson and her husband James of Dunkirk, Bonnie Whittington and her husband Tom Miller of Dunkirk, Virginia Mooney and her husband N. Douglas, Jr. of Dunkirk, and a son Joseph Whittington of Dunkirk. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Michael Ellis, Jr. and his wife Marcie of Dunkirk, Dr. Angela Kopack of Baltimore, MD, Ashley Kopack of Washington, DC, Christopher Madrigal, Lauren Jackson, Dewey, Emily and Jacob Mooney, all of Dunkirk and Rachel Whittington of Lexington Park, MD; two great grandchildren, Zachary and Madison Ellis and brothers Clifton O.
