Tiny Hancock of Indian Head, MD passed away in his home on February 13, 2010. Tiny was born September 3, 1920 in Indian Head. He was the youngest of 13 children born to the late Budd Andrew Hancock and the late Mary Elizabeth Cooksey Hancock.
Tiny was a graduate of the Lackey High School Class of 1937, and went on to serve a machinist apprenticeship at the Naval Powder Factory in Indian Head. He and his brother Cicero joined the Navy on D-Day June 6, 1944. He saw combat duty in the Pacific theatre most notably at Luzon, Leyte, the Philippines, and Iwo Jima where he narrowly survived a night bombing attack on his ship, The USS Blessman APD48, which left 41 dead. After The War, he returned to work as a machinist at Indian Head and tended the family operated Hancock's General Store on the "Old Indian Head Road" until it closed in the early 1970's. Tiny retired from the federal government in April 1982 and enjoyed a long retirement with Louise Mathews Hancock, his bride of 65 years. Traveling, particularly to the western United States, was a passion for Tiny, making his last trip to the region in 2006 with his son Gary. Taking care of his beloved bride, working with his children and grandchildren, and enjoying a very tight knit family life were of paramount importance to him. He lived a long and very full life. In addition to his parents, Tiny is preceded in death by his wife Louise Estelle Mathews Hancock whom he married June 1, 1943; brothers Budd Hancock, Marvin Hancock, Rayner Hancock, Six Hancock, Cicero Hancock and Bryan Hancock; sisters Michael Wax, Odey Price, Ruth Hancock, and Mary Lucas. He is survived by one sibling James Kaiser Hancock; daughter Elaine Renner, sons Gary Hancock and Mark Hancock; son-in-law Ernie Renner, daughters-in-law April Hancock and Cindy Hancock; grandchildren Michelle Carder, Todd Renner, Steve Renner, Nathaniel Hancock, Wesley Hancock, Seth Hancock and Selah Hancock; great-grandchildren Christian Renner, Abigail Renner, Morgan Carder, Riley Carder and Isabel Hancock. Visitation will be held Thursday, February 18 from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 at Williams Funeral Home, Indian Head. Services will begin at 11:00 Friday, February 19, and burial with military honors will follow at Trinity Memorial Gardens. A gathering of family and friends will take place at Potomac Heights Baptist Church.
