Doris Gibson Wood, 81, of Owings, MD died October 7, 2009 at her residence after a lengthy illness. Doris was born June 3, 1928 in Owings, and was raised on the Gibson family farm on Mt. Harmony Road. She enjoyed her childhood, and cherished her close relationships with sisters Ruth and Ann, and cousins Alice, Jane and Charlotte. She attended Calvert County public schools and graduated from Calvert County High School, class of 1946. She then attended and graduated from Strayer Business College, and worked for the U.S. Census Bureau for eight years.

Doris married Arden Lee Wood of Friendship on June 10, 1950, and they resided in Calvert County for their entire 54 years of marriage until Arden's death on November 17, 2004. Over the years, Doris worked as a secretary in various professions, but her true passion was the eighteen years she taught as an assistant at the All Saints Kindergarten in Sunderland, MD. Doris was a lifelong and dedicated member of Smithville United Methodist Church in Dunkirk, MD. She served as Lay Leader, President of the United Methodist Women, Youth Counselor, Sunday school teacher for 25 years, and sang in the church choir. She especially enjoyed teaching children their Sunday school songs. Doris was active in the Fairview and Mt. Harmony Elementary School P.T.A. 's where she held the office of secretary. She helped organize and served as the first president of the Dunkirk Fire Department, Company 5, Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member and past secretary of the Calvert County Democratic Women's Club, and also volunteered delivering meals on wheels.

Doris enjoyed cooking, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease several years ago, and slowly suffered with the devastating illness until her passing. She will always be fondly remembered for her humor, friendliness and her outgoing personality.

Survivors include her daughter Betty Wood Lingenfelter and her husband William of Owings, two devoted sons , Bartley Arden Wood of Owings and Thomas Gibson Wood of Elkridge, MD; a sister Ruth Gibson Davis of Silver Spring, MD, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Arden Lee Wood, her parents Floyd and Mary Ward Gibson, and her sister Mary Ann Gibson DeVeling.
