Eleanor "Virginia" Payne of Mathias, West Virginia, formerly of Compton died at her home on October 4. She was born on September 9, 1941 at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore to Albert and Virginia Quade.
Because of her mother's death during child birth, she was adopted and raised by her Aunt and Uncle, Elizabeth and Martin Pilkerton. She attended St. Joseph Parochial School in Morganza for eight years and after graduating Margaret Brent High School in 1959, she married George "Buster" Payne on July 4, 1959. They lived in Dover Delaware for the remaining 8 months of George's time in the Air Force. Virginia is survived by her husband, George, Sr. of Mathias, WV, two daughters Frannie Buckler (Donnie) of Lusby, Gail Woodburn (Dennis) of Leonardtown, two sons, Michael Payne of New South Wales, Australia and George Payne, Jr. of Hollywood. She is also survived by her grandchildren, April and Bobby Oswald, Bryan Buckler, Kyle and Kurt Woodburn, Michael Payne, Jr., Lauren Ullrich (Matt), Darren Payne and Savannah Payne and one great grandchild, Taylor. She is survived by her brothers and sisters Bill Pilkerton of Tennessee, Betty Almond (Mike) of Mechanicsville, MD, Donna Roberts (Steve) of Concord, California, Albert Quade, Jr., of Hughesville, Joe Quade of La Plata, Barbara Samuels, of Virginia, Margaret Miles of Kansas, Anna Herbert and Margie Gogate. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by 2 brothers, Bernard (Pic) Pilkerton of Mechanicsville, Jerry Quade of Hollywood, one daughter-in-law, Jeanne Payne and one sister-in-law, Lorraine Pilkerton. Virginia was a full time homemaker and mother until her husband started taking over the family business, J.J. Payne & Sons Well Drilling. She then became secretary and bookkeeper for the company. She loved Nascar racing and enjoyed camping near the race tracks when she was in good health. Her favorite drivers were Richard Petty and Mark Martin. She also enjoyed the mountains where she and her husband bought a place in 1979 as a "get away" place which turned into a full time home in 1999, when her husband retired. Her only regret with being in West Virginia was being so far away from her children and grandchildren. Burial arrangements were handled by Mattingly Gardiner Funeral Home. A private funeral was held at Charles Memorial Cemetery. She wanted this added to her obituary – "To all my friends and relatives who were not notified of my death: These were my wishes – a private burial. Please try to understand. You did not have to say good bye to my body. Just send your thoughts and love in prayers. I will hear them." Love, Virginia(Ginger, Ginny) |
