Sara Lillian Smallwood, age 87, died September 21, 2009 at Levindale Hospital in Baltimore, MD. She was born June 25, 1922 in Mountain Lake Park, Maryland, and raised in Washington, D.C. where she graduated from McKinley Technical High School, class of 1940.

She married Richard Carlton "Carl" Smallwood, Sr. on July 15, 1944 in Sanford, FL where he was stationed in the U.S. Navy. They later lived and raised their family in Hyattsville, MD, and moved to Huntingtown, MD in 1978.

Sara was an avid reader, and enjoyed mysteries and romance novels. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed visiting relatives in Garrett County in western Maryland.

She was preceded in death by her husband Carl and by her parents Charles William Garland Seymour and Estella Flora Gibson Hall.

She is survived by her daughter Patricia L. "Patti" Sheetz and her husband Miles, and by her son Richard Carlton "Rick" Smallwood II and his wife Margaret, all of Huntingtown. She is also survived by grandchildren Dawn Lister, Kelly Zajieck, Christine Sheetz, Jenny Estoque, Cindy Duty, Crystal Brady and Richard C. "Chip" Smallwood III, and by ten great-grandchildren.
