Eugene "Grandad" Paul Smith, 82 of Hughesville, MD, formerly of Capitol Heights, died on May 6, 2009 at Southern Maryland Hospital, Clinton, MD.

Born on February 22, 1927 in South Bend, Indiana, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Mary Catherine Smith. Grandad retired, after 29 years, as a Sgt. with the U.S. Park Police Department. He was also a member of the Metropolitan Police Force; including the White House and District of Columbia Police Departments; and served his community, for 30 years, with the Seat Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department, including the role of Asst. Chief. During World War II, he served as a Gunner in U.S. Navy.

Grandad loved spending time with his children and grandchildren; he was also an avid hunter and outdoorsman, animal and nature enthusiast, and enjoyed reading and anything related to world history.

He is survived by his children; Linda J. Mattingly (Steve), Mary Catherine Cassity (Robert), Steven E. Smith (Jacqueline), and the late Laura Elaine Smith; grandchildren; Jenifer Smith-Bernstein, Ensign Stephen Mattingly, USN, Lindsay and Jonathan Mattingly, Chelsea, Anna, Sara and Charlotte Cassity, Ashley and Tyler Smith, great-grandchildren; Amelia Gene and Caroline Smith Bernstein.

Preceded in death by his siblings Lana Wilburn, Mary Jane Cosby, Byron and John Smith.

Friends may call on Sunday from 6PM to 8PM at the Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, 30195 Three Notch Road, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622, and where Funeral Services will be on Monday at 11AM. Interment will follow at Charles Memorial Gardens, Leonardtown, MD.
