E. Jean Riffe, 75, of Dowell, MD, formerly a longtime resident of Huntingtown, MD, died May 2, 2009 at Solomons Nursing Center, Solomons, MD. She was born August 27, 1933 in Lego, West Virginia, and graduated from Stocco High School, class of 1951.
She married Carl Lee Riffe on June 3, 1953, and lived in Huntington, WV while Mr. Riffe attended Marshall College (now Marshall University). They moved to Falls Church, Virginia in 1959, to Greenbelt, MD in 1961, to Lanham, MD in 1967, and settled in Huntingtown, MD in 1974. She had lived in Chesapeake Beach since 2002 prior to moving to Dowell. Jean was a homemaker, worked as a school bus driver in Prince George's and Calvert Counties, and was a real estate agent in Calvert County. She was a member of Chesapeake Church in Huntingtown, the Calvert County Republican Women and the Red Hat Society, and was active in the Arts Council of Calvert County and the Calvert County Literacy Council. She enjoyed bowling, loved singing and music, and played the mandolin, flute, and piano. Jean also appeared on the television game show "Jeopardy!" in 1971. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and loved spending time with her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Carl Lee Riffe on April 23, 2002, her parents Thomas W. and Eva Cook Hampton, brothers Eldred, Clayton and Allen Hampton, sisters Frances Carte and Okie Mae Hampton. She is survived by her two sons, John C. Riffe and his wife Wanda of Chesapeake Beach, and Robert A. Riffe, Lt. Col., U.S.M.C., Ret. and his wife Clarissa of Huntingtown; grandchildren April L. Richardson and Amber K., Carl J. and Thomas R. Riffe; a sister Doris Meadows of Lakeland, FL and brothers Lynn Hampton of White Plains, MD and Bill Hampton of Columbus, OH. Friends may call on Sunday May 10 from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at Rausch Funeral Home, P.A., 8325 Mt. Harmony Lane, Owings, MD, where funeral services will be held Monday May 11 at 11:30 AM with Reverend Robert Hahn of Chesapeake Church officiating.
