David Andrew Hill, Sr., 83, of Maddox, (Chaptico) MD, was born on September 11, 1942 and died at home on September 21, 2025, surrounded by the most important people in his life: his wife, Barbara Elizabeth "Betty" Hill, his children, David A. Hill, Jr. (Denise), Barbara Yvonne Hill Burch (Richard) granddaughters, Ashley Hill (Bobby), Rachel Smallenbroek (Eric), Melissa Burch Treaster (James), Kristy Burch Garner (Jason), and David's second son, Rodney Wayne Hill.
David was blessed with three children, four grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. He was the son of the late William Douglas Hill, Sr. and Anna Louise (Morgan) Hill. He was born in Chaptico, MD, and was the fourth child born in a family of eight. David is survived by four siblings, Catherine "Kitty" Hill Minor (Don) of Orange Park, FL, Connie Hill Letourneau (Fulton) of Mechanicsville, MD, Virginia "Ginger" Hill Quade (Rhodie) of Chaptico, MD, Richard "Ricky" Hill (Sandy) of Hollywood. MD, and a special sister-in-law, Jo Ann Hill, of Hollywood, MD. He was preceded in death by his brothers, William D. "Billy" Hill (Mona), Joseph "Joe" Hill, and Johnny Hill. David only lived in two towns during his whole life. He was raised in Maddox and enjoyed the simple life. He had a love of working the land and helping his parents raise tobacco crops and beautiful gardens. He also enjoyed anything to do with the Wicomico River. He loved fishing, crabbing, oystering, swimming, and water skiing with his cousins and friends in his younger years. As he grew from his youth, he ventured out and got a job on the Wilson Line Tour Boat that toured from Marshal Hall theme park to Mount Vernon, VA. Although he didn't work there long, it was a fond memory that he loved to talk about. He even had a picture of that boat hanging in his living room. After his adventure with the Wilson Line, he started dating his one life-love, Betty. His life really started changing then; he got a job working for Kettler Brothers Construction in Rockville, MD, and then married his love on October 2,1965, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Bushwood, MD. Together they celebrated almost 60 years of love. David worked for Kettler Brothers, Inc. for 31 years and made his way back to Maddox every weekend. Although he lived in Rockville, Maddox was always home. After retirement, he and Betty moved back to Chaptico Wharf to his father's house to take care of him until his death in 1998.All three of his children had already made their way back to the county and called it home. David eventually removed the house from the old home place, and he and his sons built a new house in 2000 and that was his and Bettys' home until his death. David truly enjoyed his retirement. He could be found at the liquor store in Chaptico enjoying a cold beer or just roaming around at some of the other local bars playing some keno and bringing home some scratch offs for his Betty to scratch. Some of his buddies called him "The Mayor of Slabtown" --- an old slang term for Maddox. David was a great carpenter. He helped his brother, Billy, do remodeling work at his restaurants, The Halfway House and St. Mary's Landing, during his early retirement years. He enjoyed playing cards and was the King of Karaoke. He loved to sing some old Hank Williams songs and was pretty good at it too. Everyone at any party loved to hear David sing. David was so much a part of the family and will be missed by so many friends and family. David was one of those people that was easy to love. The family will receive friends on Friday, September 26, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, in Our Lady Of The Wayside Catholic Church, Chaptico, MD, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 PM with Father Chip Luckett officiating. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery, Bushwood, MD. Serving as pallbearers will be Robert Hill, Jr., Robert "Bobby" Hill, Roger Hill, Jr., William "WT" McLaughlin, Eric Smallenbroek, and Phillip Quade III. Honorary pallbearers will be Kaye Bailey, Rachel Smallenbroek, Ashley Hill, Wesley Hill, Andy Bell, and Richard Burch. Contributions may be made in David's memory to the Seventh District Volunteer Rescue Squad and/or Hospice of St. Mary's. |
