A proud veteran, Bernard served his country with honor in the United States Army. During his two years of service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal—testaments to his courage and commitment.

On April 11, 1972, Bernard married the love of his life, Frances Miller. Together, they built a loving home and raised four children: Bernard Jason Miller of Mechanicsville, MD; Lisa Jones of Washington, D.C.; Stacy Miller of Spotsylvania, VA; and the late Donna Miller of Washington, D.C. He was a devoted brother to Michael Miller of Frederick, MD; Denise Miller; and the late Michelle Simmons of TX.
