Robert Emmett "Bob" Wrabley Jr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather, educator and coach, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2025, at the age of 92.
Born on June 20, 1932 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to the late Robert Emmett "Cal" Wrabley Sr. and Dorothy Wrabley (Bahr). In addition to his parents and brother Gerry, Bob grew up in an extended household of aunts, uncles and cousins. He was particularly close to his cousins Ray Wrabley and Donnie Doyle who were the exact same age. They were inseparable all the way through high school, earning them the moniker "the three twins." Together they got into all manner of mischief, the tales of which have become part of the lore of our family. From an early age, Bob displayed an aptitude for sports excelling in both football and baseball. He was mentored in this by his uncle Herman "Ham" Bahr and cousin Bill Wrabley. Bob went on to star at Central Catholic High School where he became a highly recruited quarterback. He initially accepted a scholarship to LSU but found the deep south too different from Pittsburgh. He came home and enrolled at Pitt and started as a defensive back and kicker. An ulcer forced him to sit out a year and then he transferred to St. Vincent College where he was an Allstar on offense and defense. He graduated from St. Vincent in 1956 with a Master's Degree in History. After graduating his desire for football was still strong and he signed a free agent contract with the Washington Redskins. A broken leg in the final preseason game abruptly ended his football career and opened the door to his new one. His Uncle "Ham" who had cut tobacco in St. Mary's County in the summers was aware Charlotte Hall Military Academy was looking for someone to coach multiple sports and teach history, he'd found his new career. In addition to teaching his first year he also coached football, basketball and baseball. Bob would go on to coach football for 20 seasons at Charlotte Hall and become one of the most respected coaches in Maryland. Charlotte Hall consistently fielded good teams in spite of having a tiny student body seldom exceeding 150 boys. It was also at Charlotte Hall that Bob met Mary Emily "Tootie" Burroughs who would be the love of his life. They married on July 25, 1958 and would spend 60 wonderful years together until her death in 2018. Together they would raise two sons Neal Robert Wrabley and Brian Edward Wrabley both of Mechanicsville. Charlotte Hall would close in 1976 and Bob would go on to coach and teach at Thomas Stone High School and the last 14 years of his career at Great Mills High School. Bob was a proud father and grandfather and is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law Debbie(Lawrence) and Sheila (Hyman), as well as his cherished grandsons Kyle and Ross. He is also survived by his brother Gerard Wrabley and sister-in-law Peggy Wrabley (Werner) of Crafton, Pennsylvania. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Regis Wrabley and too many wonderful cousins and in-laws to name. In his spare time Bob was an avid golfer where he was a long-time member at Wicomico Shores where he was famous for his long drives and throwing golf clubs. He loved to read anything about World War 2 history, crossword puzzles and doing yardwork. He and "Tootie" traveled often in the U.S. and Europe where Scotland was his favorite place. Mostly he loved his family especially his grandsons but also his extended family of cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews both Burroughs and Wrabley families. He was a kindhearted man who always took time to indulge young people whether it was teaching or coaching or throwing the ball in the back yard. He made a legion of friends along the way and touched the lives of many young people who will remember him with love, respect and gratitude. In accordance with Bob's wishes, interment will be private for family only. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mechanicsville Volunteer Rescue Squad in Bob's name. |
