Susana Medestomas Cayanan passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on May 3, 2025, at MedStar Hospital in Washington, D.C., just two weeks shy of her 66th birthday. Born on May 18, 1959, in Manila, Philippines, Susana lived a life marked by quiet strength, faith, and unwavering devotion to those she loved.
In September 1995, Susana and her husband, Benjamin, immigrated to the United States with their children, beginning a new chapter of life together as a family. What followed would become one of the most defining miracles in their journey: just months after their arrival, on May 6, 1996, Susana underwent an open-heart combined valve surgery, a procedure that saved her life. Had they still been in the Philippines, the outcome may have been tragically different. For her family, that moment remains a profound gift, a turning point that affirmed they were meant to be here, together, for many more years. She carried the weight of motherhood with grace, raising her children with care, love, and resilience. In every season, she remained deeply devoted to her husband, always ensuring he was looked after, even across great distances. A selfless provider and loyal sister, Susana never forgot her roots. Coming from humble beginnings, she consistently found ways to support her siblings back in the Philippines. Beginning in the mid-2000s, she resumed traveling there every few years with her husband, treasuring her time with family. Her most recent visit in February 2025 became an especially meaningful reunion. Susana is survived by her loving husband, Benjamin Cayanan, and their children: Dhavidson Cayanan and his wife Holly, John Michael Cayanan and his wife Trish, and Anne Vivien Savoy. She was a proud and gentle grandmother to Ryhane, Chayce, Nevaeh, Ella, Lukas, Levi, and Isaac. She was one of thirteen siblings and is lovingly remembered by the nine who survive her today. Her life was deeply grounded in faith. Susana and Benjamin were members of Couples for Christ for several years after moving to the U.S., and she continued to attend church regularly with her husband. Her spirituality was quiet but constant, woven into the way she loved and endured. Susana found her greatest joy in the simple, lasting things - family, food, and the comfort of home. She loved cooking for the people she loved, especially seafood, which was her favorite. She also found deep joy in returning to the Philippines, where her heart always felt at home. Whether she was cooking for her family, quietly smiling during conversations, or planning her next trip back home, Susana was most alive when she was near the people and places she loved most. She also had a deep love for plants and flowers, especially orchids. Her home and yard overflowed with blooms she lovingly cared for, living expressions of her quiet nurturing spirit. They brought her peace, beauty, and a connection to nature that reflected her soul. She will be remembered for her gentle spirit, easygoing nature, and the deep love she shared with everyone around her. Susana was cherished not only by her immediate family but also by her extended relatives and friends, whose lives she touched with grace and care. Her presence brought calm, her kindness was steady, and her memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved her. The family is having a service on May 14, 2025 at Holy Face Catholic Church it is however a private service. In lieu of flowers please make donations in Susana's honor to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692. Arrangements by Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. Leonardtown, MD. |
