Mrs. Sickle, the former Dorothy Rosa Greenwell, 96, of California, MD, died on February 18, 2025, at Suburban Hospital, Bethesda, MD.

Born in Hollywood on March 1, 1928, she was the seventh of nine children of Valley I. Greenwell (a Trial Magistrate for St. Mary's County) and Blanche E. Jones Greenwell.

Dorothy married William Joseph "Joe" Sickle on February 1, 1947, at St. Aloysius Church, Leonardtown, MD. She was preceded in death by her husband on January 06, 2009.

Dorothy and Joe had five children: Dorothy Ann, William Kenneth, Joseph Clarence, Elizabeth Louise, and Kathryn Lynn. Joe and Dorothy built their home in 1957 on the Sickle farm. Joe and Dorothy, and the children, sustained the family by raising livestock and growing a wide assortment of crops. She opened a needlecraft shop on the farm, which gave her younger daughters business experience. Dorothy and Joe raised their children, by example, to be committed to religious values, education, hard work, and charitable pursuits.

"Dot", as she was known by her many friends and family, was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was an active member of the Ladies of Charity in Holy Face Church. She devoted many hours as a member of the Senior Vibes singing group and as a volunteer with numerous charitable organizations in St. Mary's County. With a gracious heart, she donated to local, regional, and national charitable organizations.

Surviving family members include: a sister, Agnes (Greenwell) Poe of Valley Lee, MD; Five children- Dorothy S. Prickett (Arthur) of California, MD; W. Kenneth Sickle (Cheryl) of Belmont, MI; Joseph C. Sickle of Hollywood, MD; Elizabeth S. Stricker (Andrew) of Tallassee, AL; and Kathryn Flitter (Lance) of Poolesville, MD; nine grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, where prayers will be said at 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at 10:00 AM in Holy Face Catholic Church, Great Mills, MD. Interment will follow in the family plot at Holy Face Church cemetery.
