Helen Marie (Goecke) Newell, 78, of Great Mills, Maryland, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2024.
Helen was born in Estherville, Iowa, and spent her early years in Royale. In high school, she moved with her family to Wichita, Kansas, where she graduated from South High School in 1964. In 1966, Helen married a young Navy man, Ken Newell. The couple tied the knot on April 15—Helen's birthday and a subtle reminder to always file their taxes on time. Together, they shared 51 years of marriage, filled with adventure, love, and mutual support. As a Navy wife, Helen embraced a life of travel, moving with Ken to places like California, Spain, and Guam before finally settling in Great Mills, Maryland. There, she resumed her passion for education, working as a teacher's aide at Green Holly School, where she supported developmentally challenged children. This experience became deeply personal when her daughter Katie was born with cerebral palsy. Helen's dedication to her family shone as she worked tirelessly to provide Katie with a fulfilling and joyful life. After Katie's passing in 1990, Helen channeled her compassion and determination into her work at United Cerebral Palsy of Southern Maryland. She quickly rose to the position of Director of the Lexington Park office, where she made a lasting impact, advocating for individuals with disabilities and supporting families in need. Along the way, Helen also earned her Bachelor's Degree, further demonstrating her commitment to personal growth and service to others. After retiring from United Cerebral Palsy, Helen joined her husband full-time at their business, GrapeVine Antiques and Collectibles. With her keen eye for unique finds and her love of vintage style, she helped the shop thrive, all while keeping Ken's ever-growing collection of antique tools under control. Helen is survived by her two sons, Steve and Kevin, her daughters-in-law, Ellen and Olena, her sister Joan, and her five beloved grandchildren: Isabella, Gabriella, Andrew, Sasha, and Naomi. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jenny and Raymond, her siblings Michael and Mary, her husband Ken, and her two children, Darren and Katie.
