Lawrence "Larry" Edward Rooney, Jr., age 97 of Williamsport, Md., passed away on September 15, 2024 at Doey's House in Hagerstown, Md.

Larry, was born August 29, 1927 in Braintree, MA. He was the son of the late Lawrence E Rooney and Ellen Griffin Rooney. In addition to his parents, he was proceeded in death by his wife, Dorothy Robey Rooney.

Larry spent his childhood in New Bedford, MA. He graduated from New Bedford High School in 1947. Larry's passion was to be a pilot. He began his journey in 1944, when he enlisted in the Reserve Corps of the Army at the age of seventeen. He received his college degree from Brown University in 1951, this was a requirement for admission into jet fighter training with the Navy.

Larry joined the Navy in 1953 and was stationed in Pensacola, FL., where he completing his operational training flights and qualified on the F9F-6 Cougar. Proceeding his training, he was deployed to the Mediterranean Sea, and assigned to the Fighting 103 Fighter Squadron aboard the USS Coral Sea.

Following his Naval career, he joined Capital Airlines in April 1956 later becoming United Airlines in 1961. He was promoted to Captain and flew the "friendly skies" as a Captain for 31 years, and retired in 1987.

Upon his retirement, Larry pursued many interests. He invested in real estate, farming, travelled to Ireland and South Africa. However, his favorite past time and passion was golf. He eventually became a lifetime member at two local country clubs. In character, Larry was an honest and trust worthy man. He was humble, humorous, empathetic, and accountable. The definition of a true gentleman.

Larry is survived by his children: Bridget DeRonda (Albert) Charles Town WV, Colin E Rooney Sr. (Julie), Mechanicsville Md. and Megan Rooney, Las Vegas NV and grandchildren: Cathryn DeRonda, Colin E Rooney Jr. (Ayla), Sean Rooney, Abbie Rooney and great child, Alexandra Clark.
