James Edward Lacey, 95 of Avenue, MD passed away peacefully surrounded by family at home in Great Mills on May 1, 2024. He was born on November 15, 1928 in Oakley, MD to the late Walter and Minnie Lacey. Ed married the love of his life, Ida in November 1953. They were happily married sharing 67 wonderful years until her passing in August 2021.
Ed was a master mechanic and enjoyed working on cars, trucks, boats, tractors, etc. He grew up as a farmer working in the tobacco fields of Southern Maryland becoming a mechanic and ending his career retiring from the State Highway Administration. He had many hobbies through the years enjoying: hunting, boating, fishing, crabbing, gardening, an occasional slot machine trip, and jigsaw puzzles. He spent 12 hours a day, everyday working on a multitude of jigsaw puzzles the past 3 years determined to remain busy as he could no longer work outside. Ed is survived by his children: Dennis E. Lacey of Great Mills, MD, Mary J. "Jackie" Ellis (James) of Valley Lee, MD and Lillian "Peggy" M. Alvey (Roger) of Avenue, MD; his grandchildren: Robert Michael Unkle Jr. (Crystal), James Alvin Unkle (Heather), Tammy Marie Russell, Jacqueline Michelle Mattingly (Matthew) and Lisa Ann Ellis (Tyler Baldwin); 12 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild. He is also survived by his sisters, Shirley Knott of Chaptico, Dorothy Trossbach (Philip) of Avenue, brother Joe Lacey (Gertrude) of Avenue. He was predeceased by his sisters, Margaret Hill, Louise Mattingly, Ann Cheseldine and Theresa Thompson, brothers, Joseph H. Lacey, John G. Lacey and Andrew Lacey. Family will receive friends Wednesday, May 8, 2024 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with prayers and rosary being said at 7:00 p.m. at Brinsfield Funeral Home, 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD 20650. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday. May 9, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 21340 Colton Point Road, Avenue, MD 20609. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery, 23080 Maddox Road, Bushwood, MD 20618. Serving as pallbearers: James Unkle Sr., James Unkle Jr., Matthew Mattingly, Tyler Baldwin, Michael Lacey and Robert Lacey. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Mary's, P.O.
