James C. Raley, Jr., 76, of Leonardtown, MD passed on February 7, 2009 at the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, IN.
Jim was born in Maddox, MD on April 18, 1932 and remained a life-long resident of St. Mary's County. He was the son of Elsie Swann Raley and James Carroll Raley, Sr. Jim worked at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station for thirty-five years and was the Director of the Computer Science Directorate (CSD).Upon retirement, he received the highest award granted to a civilian by the Department of the Navy. After retirement, he remained very active serving as the Director of the Sotterly Mansion, the Director of the Hospice of St. Mary's County, as well as an instructor for the College of Southern Maryland. He served on numerous boards for his church and local community, and remained a very active member of the Leonardtown Lions Club. He is survived by his wife, Isabelle Waring Raley, of Leonardtown, MD, whom he married on April 19, 1952. He is also survived by his three children; Jack Raley and Carolyn Davis both of Leonardtown, MD, and Suzanne Mower and her husband Scott of Hughesville, MD, five grandchildren; Austin Davis and wife LeAna of Leonardtown, MD, William Davis and wife Tosha of Hampton, VA, Kristen Phelan and husband Michael of Greenville, NC, Deanna Davis of Leonardtown, MD and Katelyn Mower of Hughesville, MD, great-grandchildren; Devon and Kaylee Davis of Hampton, VA. Family will receive friends for Mr. Raley's Life Celebration on Friday, February 13, 2009 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 22800 Washington Street, Leonardtown, MD 20650. Prayers will be recited at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Reverend John Dakes and Reverend Rory Conley will be the concelebrants. Interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Mary's, P.O. Box 625, Leonardtown, MD 20650 or St. Aloysius Catholic Church, P.O. Box 310, Leonardtown, MD 20650. Serving as pallbearers will be J. MacGuire "Mock" Mattingly, George Kalnasy, Jr., Andy Pennisi, Rayner Blair, Mike Sullivan and Bobby Sterling.
