Laverne Sweeney Herndon of Hollywood, Maryland, went home to Jesus on Friday, January 15, 2021, at the age of 79.

Laverne was born in Washington, D.C., at Columbia Hospital for Women, on May 31, 1941. She was the daughter of the late Daniel and Mavis (Thompson) Sweeney, also of Hollywood, Maryland. Laverne's only child, Daniel James "DJ" Villa, 55, passed away in his sleep on August 5, 2020, in Missouri.

Laverne graduated from Leonardtown High School in 1960, and also attend Eastern Nazarene College in Massachusetts. During college, she was a member of the Evangelistic Association, and Sigma Delta Kappa. She went on to serve more than 41 years of dedicated service working for the Department of Navy, both at the Patuxent Naval Air Station, in Lexington Park, Maryland, and in Arlington, Virginia. During her service, she received multiple certificates and awards for her outstanding performance. Laverne was a dedicated mother. She was heartbroken by the untimely death of her only child, DJ, late last year.

Laverne is survived by her brother, Daniel "Danny" Sweeney Jr., and her two grandchildren, Vance Villa of Missouri, and Carly Villa of North Carolina.

She is also survived by lots of loving cousins from her Thompson side and her Sweeney side. Some have treasured memories of their childhood walking to Grand-Mom (Daisy) and Grand-Pop's (Briscoe Thompson's) farm; running errands, feeding chickens, slopping the pigs, and sometimes wishing they had not decided to visit their Grandparents on the farm!

Laverne attended Leonardtown Church of the Nazarene. Growing up, she attended Hollywood Nazarene Church.

A graveside service is being planned for later this spring, and will be held at Hollywood Nazarene Church with Rev. Paul MacPherson officiating. Specific times and dates will be announced at a later time.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the Leonardtown Nazarene Church or the Hollywood Nazarene Church.
