A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, November 20, 2006 at 10:00 AM in St. John's Catholic Church, Hollywood, MD with Fr. Raymond Schmidt officiating. Interment will be private.
Public visitation will be held in the funeral home on Sunday, November 19, 2006 from 2 - 5 PM with prayers being said at 3:00 PM. Mary Joan Long, 75, of Mechanicsville, MD died November 16, 2006 at St. Mary's Hospital. Born December 27, 1930 on the family farm in Hollywood to the parents of the late Joseph and Louise Alvey. Joan graduated from St. John's School in Hollywood, MD on June 4, 1944, St. Mary's Academy on June 14, 1948. After graduating from high school Joan attended Georgetown University School of Nursing, graduating in 1949. She then worked as a private duty nurse for the late Dr. Rutt in Washington, DC. Joan met the late Thomas L. Long, Sr. and they married at St. John Francis Regis Church on January 19, 1950. In 1958 Joan and Lester moved back to Mechanicsville, MD for good. Joan worked as a nurse for the late Dr. Charles Greenwell, who had a practice in Leonardtown, MD. Joan worked for Dr. Greenwell until her retirement in 1963. Joan then became a homemaker and took care of her husband lovingly until his death on February 7, 1983. Joan then lovingly took care of her son, Michael until he was placed in the Bayside Care Center in Lexington Park, MD, where he died on August 22, 2006. She was also preceded in death by her siblings Mary Connor, Phiney Cusic, Nita Anderson and Ray Alvey. She is survived by her children, Ellen M. Long of Hollywood, MD, Gerri Stokel of Leonardtown, MD, Thomas L. Long, Jr and his wife Ruby of Chesterfield, VA, Sandra A. Eversberg and her husband Michael of Hollywood, MD and Patricia Lewis of Richmond, VA; her grandchildren Joan M. West, Thomas L. Long, III, Jennifer A. Long, Michael F. Eversberg, II, William C. Eversberg, Jessica F. Eversberg and Marty Eversberg. She was the great-grandmother of James R. Long, Rachel E. West, Zoe A. Long and Sophia A. Long. The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 19, 2006 from 2:00 – 5:00 PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, where Prayers will be said at 3:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, November 20, 2006 at 10:00 AM in St. John Francis Regis Church, Hollywood, MD with Fr. Raymond Schmidt officiating. Interment will be Private. A reception will follow the Mass at the Hollywood Volunteer Rescue Squad. Pallbearers will be Thomas L. Long, III, Kevin Cusic, Harold Anderson, Jr., Joseph Alvey, Jack Downing and Martin Long. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Jessica Eversberg, Michael Eversberg, Marty Eversberg, Audrey Downing, Joan West and Jennifer Long.
