Iva Plummer Owings, age 94, died September 29, 2008 at Calvert County Nursing Center in Prince Frederick. She was born February 28, 1914 in Chaney Station, now part of Dunkirk in Calvert County.

The daughter of Thomas Harrison and Ethel Moreland Plummer, she was raised in Jewell, MD and attended the former and Tracey's High School. She graduated from Towson State Normal School (now Towson University) in 1932, took extended classes at the University of Maryland, and was a public school teacher. She began her teaching career at Surrattsville Elementary, where she taught from 1932 until 1935. She was Principal at Deale Elementary from 1940 to 1943, and was 1st Grade teacher at Tracey's Elementary from 1951 to 1971.

She married Lawrence Herbert Owings on April 17, 1935 and they lived and raised their family in Friendship, MD. She was a member of the Maryland State Teachers Association, the National Education Association, the Homemakers Club of Calvert County, and N.A.R.F.E. She was a life-long member of Friendship United Methodist Church where she was Superintendent of the Church School children's division, a Sunday School teacher, member of the church choir, President of the Women's Society, and Secretary of the History and Building Committees.

She enjoyed collecting shells, growing plants, bird-watching and writing poetry. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and also with her many friends and former students. Her husband Lawrence, known as Kaiser, died September 24, 1988. Miss Iva had been a resident at Calvert County Nursing Center for the past six months, and had previously lived in the Calvert Pines senior apartments for several years.
