After a long illness, Ambrose Smallwood, 82 years old, departed this life on Sunday, June 22, 2008 at Civista Medical Center in La Plata, Maryland. Ambrose, better known as "Brose," was born on April 11, 1926 in Newburg, MD to the late Mabel Wheeler and the late Albert Smallwood.

In addition to his parents, and two siblings, Ambrose was preceded in death by his life long companion, Mary Elizabeth Fenwick.

Ambrose attended school in Newburg, Maryland until he had to quit to work on the farm to help take care of his family. He was a very hard worker both as a farmer and later as a construction worker. On the farm, Ambrose loved to drive the tractor that he named "H." He would drive "H" as if it were a car, taking it everywhere he went. After the tractor was gone it was replaced with a truck that he named "the yellow bucket."

Ambrose attended St. May's Newport Catholic Church until his health declined. He loved to tell jokes and play cards. He was a very loyal and dependable man and would help anyone if he could. He was also a private person and you would never know if he ever was in need. We celebrate his life, not his death and thank GOD for allowing us to have him in our lives!

Left behind to cherish his memory: one sister, Gertrude Dee (Oxon Hill, MD), three nieces, Viola Warren (Woodbridge, VA), Mary Wills (Indian Head, MD) and Theresa Ross (Hertford, NC) and a very special nephew, Ronnie Wills (Bel Alton, MD) who, along with his wife, Janice were Ambrose's care providers until his death, and a host of great nieces, great nephews, other relatives and friends.

His viewing will take place on Friday, June 27th, 10:00am until Mass of Christian Burial 11:00a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 11555 St. Mary's Church Road, Charlotte Hall, MD. Interment Church Cemetery.

Arrangements entrusted to Thornton Funeral Home, P.A.
