Paul William Carnes, 89, of La Plata MD passed into God's hands on August 11, 2015 at home shortly after entering Hospice Care.
Paul was beloved by all for his witty sense of humor, fun-loving ways, the sparkle in his eyes, strong moral code, loyalty to family and country, and kind, gentle heart. He enjoyed CB radios, clocks, computers, his lawn and cub tractors, playing cards, automobiles, eating crabs, riding motorcycles with his sons, animals, ATVs, his wife's cooking, country and bluegrass music, Redskins, Nationals, Judge Judy, and Family Feud. Most of all, Paul treasured being a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Paul was born in Point of Rocks MD. He joined the Army Air Corp when he was 17 and trained to be a B-17 bombardier during World War II. In 1951, he married Patricia Mae Smith of Rapid City SD. With three young children, they relocated from Rockville to La Plata MD in 1959 when Paul was hired as the Sales Manager at the Frank Wade Ford Motor Company. In 1962, Paul became self-employed. Until his retirement in 1985, Paul's businesses included Carnes Esso Service, Carnes Auto Sales, and White Plains Gulf. At the Gulf station, he sponsored numerous high school students enrolled in the Charles County Cooperative Vocational Education program. Paul also served as a Charles County Slot Machine Inspector in the 60's and has been a longtime member of the American Legion, Lions Club, and the La Plata United Methodist Church. Paul Carnes was a great, honorable man and will always be loved and never forgotten. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 64 years Patricia, son Alan, and siblings Roy, Virginia, and Woodrow. He is survived by his son James Carnes, daughter Deborah McManus and son-in-law Michael, his grandson Justin Carnes and wife Beth, granddaughter Lauren Cross and husband Andy, his step-grandchildren Kelly and Kimberly, and his great grandchildren Blake, Charlotte, Austin, and Sophia. Family and friends will be received on Monday, August 17, 2015 from 10:00AM until the 11:00 AM Funeral Service at the Raymond Funeral Service Chapel, 5635 Washington Avenue, La Plata, MD. Interment will follow at the Trinity Memorial Gardens in Waldorf, MD. Immediately following the internment, family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life.
