Winston W. Burroughs, 92, of Waldorf, MD passed away on July 26, 2015. He was born on April 5, 1923 in Charlotte Hall, MD to William and Mabel Burroughs.

In addition to his beloved wife of 64 years, Rose Montgomery Burroughs, Winston is survived by his sons, Chuck (Debbie) Burroughs, Jimmy (Debbie) Burroughs, and daughter Barbara Jean (Ronnie) Wible, brother J. Donald Burroughs and sister Dorothea "Dotsy" Barber. He is survived by ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Winston "Duke" Burroughs, Jr., his sister Margaret "Lucky" Chenault and brother, W. Brewer Burroughs.

He was a ball turret gunner on a B-17 Bomber during World War II. Winston was wounded in action, receiving shrapnel wounds to his neck and back. On his twenty-third mission his plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire. He was forced to bail out over German-occupied France. He was captured by the Nazis and spent the next eleven months as a prisoner of war. In February 1945 he and thousands of Allied POWs were forced to march west for 82 days with little food and no shelter. On May 6, 1945 he was liberated by the British. He spent twenty-one days in a hospital in Belgium before returning home to the United States. For his service, he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, Prisoner of War Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and four Air Medals.

After being honorably discharged Winston worked at the Naval Research Lab and the Naval Oceanographic Office, retiring in 1979. Winston was a member of American Legion Post 238, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8674 and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He was also a member of All Faith Episcopal Church, Charlotte Hall, Maryland.

Winston's family wishes to recognize the care and support provided by the staff of Charlotte Hall Veterans Home and Hospice of St. Mary's.

Family will receive friends for visitation on Wednesday, July 29 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Brinsfield Echols Funeral Home, 30195 Three Notch Rd, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622. A Funeral Service will be celebrated on Thursday, July 30 at 11 am at All Faith Episcopal Church, 38885 New Market Turner Rd, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Mary's or Charlotte Hall Veterans Home. Arrangements provided by Brinsfield Echols Funeral Home.
