James "Jim" O. Shaffer, Jr., 73, of La Plata, MD passed away on July 15, 2015 at George Washington University Hospital, Washington, DC. Jim was born on January 20, 1942 in Catonsville, MD to the late James O. Shaffer, Sr. and the late Elsie Webb Shaffer.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Mary; son, Bill Gray (Susan); daughter, Wanda White (Tom); grandchildren, Louis Murphy,III, Jenna and Kristine Gray; great-grandchildren, Colin and Connor Murphy; and his beloved dog, Roxie.

After graduating from high school Jim joined the Air Force (1961-1965). He then started his career in Communications at AT&T, retiring 34 years later. Jim was a long-time member of the American Legion (Post 82). He liked to hunt and fish in his spare time and was a great woodworker.

The family will receive friends at Arehart-Echols Funeral Home, 211 St. Mary's Ave., La Plata, MD on Thursday, July 23, 2015, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM, where a Funeral Service will be held at 7:00 PM, followed by an American Legion Service. Interment will be held on Friday, July 24, 2015 at Maryland Veteran's Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD at 10:15 AM. Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Gray, George Liebal, Dylan Pomerleau, Armand Pomerleau, Louis Murphy, III, and Colin Murphy.
