Mr. Nutter was President and owner since 1965 of Center Distributors, Inc. In his early career, he was a member of the Baltimore Colts championship teams of 1958 & 1959, playing the position of Center with Johnny Unitas, winning the 1958 Championship (first championship game to go into overtime) over the New York Giants - know as the "Greatest Game Ever Played." He played 12 seasons in the NFL, eight with the Baltimore Colts and four with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was named All-Pro in 1962. He was a graduate of Virginia Tech University where he is a member of their Sports Hall of Fame along with the State of West Virginia's Hall of Fame. He was the first player from Virginia Tech to be drafted by the NFL. He was a founding member of the Johnny Unitas Youth Football League. He was a charter member of the Waldorf Elks Lodge, Lions club, and the NFL Players Association.
Son of the late Ira Nutter and the late Jessie Moore Nutter. Predeceased by her parents and his loving wife, Carole Lombardo Nutter. Survived by his three sons, David M. (Kathy) Nutter of Bryantown, Md., Douglas I. (Lisa) Nutter of Marbury, Md., and Brian M. (Katherine) Nutter of La Plata, MD.; one daughter, Lisa (Dennis) Bowie of Burlington, Ontario; one brother, Bill Nutter of West Virginia; two sisters, Anne Allen of West Virginia and Judy Young of Florida; also, survived by 10 grandchildren. Visitation on Saturday, April 19, 2008 from 10 am-1pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 201 St. Mary's Ave., La Plata, Md. 20646. Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 1pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Clergy will be Rev. Ron Potts. Interment at Mt. Carmel Monastery, La Plata, Md. Pallbearers will be Heather Bowie Young, Tony Bowie, Megan Bowie Ballentine, Stephen, Jessica, Rachel, Dustin, Christopher, Michael, and Caitlin Nutter. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jim Mutscheller, Doug Eggers, Art Donovan, Alex Sandusky, Dr. Ed McDonnell, Forrest King, and Steve Suit.
