John Cleavon Johnson, 72, of Indian Head Maryland departed this earthly life on June 18, 2015 at University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center in La Plata, Maryland. Born June 20, 1943 to the late Mary M. And James L. Johnson of Hermanville Road, St. Mary's County, Maryland, he was the oldest of six children. He was affectionately known as Clea to many.
John was educated in the St. Mary's County school system. While in his teens, he learned a trade working with Mr. Saturday Smith doing home improvement work which set his career as a first grade carpenter and a jack of all trades. Well known in the county for his excellent work, when he was called he never failed to answer with his formula response, "I'll be right there." His greatest enjoyment was collecting old things and spending time with his family and friends. He always took time to teach his nephews the trade of home improvement. They would always say "Uncle Cleavon is good, he know some stuff." He was definitely an entrepreneur in the home improvement business. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his step-father, William T. Gough, two brothers, Paul R. and James L. Johnson, grandparents, aunts, uncles and nephews. Left to cherish many memories are his daughters, Diana "Di" C. Johnson, Angela "Angie" Denise Johnson, grandchildren, Caroline D. Johnson, Lyndon A. and Kevin I. Lucien and Vernita S. Daniels, great-grandchildren, Jabari M. Andino and Zhamora M. Taylor, two sisters, Doris E. Johnson and Juanita A. Gough, one brother, Joseph B. Johnson, step-brother, Robert S. Bennett, one aunt, Viola Whalen, sisters-in-law, Marva P. Johnson and Mary Ann Johnson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. His viewing will be held on Friday, June 26, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. until time of service 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, MD 20640.
