James Hugh Herbert, Sr., affectionately known as "Iggy" or "Jimmie", 74, of Hughesville, MD passed away peacefully April 19 , 2015 at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Born August 25, 1940 in Hughesville, he was the son of Charles Webster Herbert, Sr. and Bessie Mae Knott Herbert.
After service in the U.S. Army in Germany, he returned home and was employed as an estimator/ analyst for PEPCO at the Chalk Point plant until his retirement in 1998. A dedicated, lifetime member of the Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department, joining at the age of 16, he held every position from new firefighter to Chief as well as positions on the Board of Directors. For several years he served as Captain of the Hughesville Volunteer Rescue Squad. Jimmie also held the position as Chief for the Charles County Firemen's Association. He was most proud of the Southern Maryland Honor Guard. Being a founding member (1996), he faithfully served for 19 years. Active in the local community, Jimmie coached and umpired Little League softball and baseball, as well as playing on the fire department and local business teams. He was a past President of the Charles County Chapter of the Isaac Walton League. He will be remembered as a person dedicated to helping others. Predeceased by his parents and brother Charles Webster Herbert, Jr., Jimmie is survived by his wife of 46 years, Joan Elaine Young Herbert; sons, James "Jay" Herbert, Jr. and Scott Edward Herbert; grandchildren, Jenna Courtney Herbert , Shelby Rae Herbert and Blake Herbert. The family will receive friends for Jimmie's Life Celebration on Friday, April 24, 2015 from 2:00 – 8:00p.m. with Firemen's Prayers at 7:00p.m. at the Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department, 15245 Prince Frederick Rd., Hughesville, MD. A Firemen's Service will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 11:00a.m. at the Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Gardens, 3321 Mattawoman-Beantown Rd., Waldorf, MD 20604. Pallbearers will be Bobby Hall, Mike Quade, Mike Wible, Mike Roberts, Antwan Thomas and Buster Canter. Memorial donations may be made in Jimmie's name to Restore Engine 21 Fire Truck, Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department, 15245 Prince Frederick Rd., Hughesville, MD 20637.
