Leonard "Shorty" Austin Painter, age 63, of Pomfret, MD, died on March 17, 2015 at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC.

Shorty was a Sprinkler Mechanic at the Naval Surface Warfare Center. He was a Master Mason for 25 years who taught catechism for Masonic members at the St. Colomba Lodge. In his younger days, he played softball for several teams, including Jimmy's Paddock and NSWC teams.

He was known as a beloved father, husband, son, and grandfather. He was a friend to all he met and greeted everyone with a smile and a joke. He was playful and loved to tell and play jokes. He loved his family with his whole heart and took great joy in his grandchildren. He brought great joy to the world and touched the lives of all he met. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family and loved to take family camping vacations.

He is the son of the late Willard Austin Painter and the living Grace Inez Painter Lechlider. He is survived by his wife, Carla Susan Painter; his son, Jason Leonard Painter and his wife Connie Louise Crowley Painter; his daughter, Carrie Michelle Sager and her husband Michael Justin Sager; his sister, Patricia Ann Small and her husband Bobby Joe Small; and his grandchildren, Wesley Austin Painter, Dustin Leonard Painter, Dominic Michael Sager, and Lillian Jewel Sager.

Friends received on Monday, March 23, 2015 from 2-4PM and 6-8PM with Funeral Service at 7PM at the Raymond Funeral Service Chapel, 5635 Washington Avenue, La Plata, MD 20646. Interment will be private.
