The Arts Council of Calvert County is one of 24 county arts councils in the state of Maryland. Each of the arts councils is the entity by which the state provides funding to the counties for the arts. The Arts Council of Calvert County is also fortunate to receive funding from the Calvert County government. This funding, in addition to membership fees, allows us to offer grants to arts organizations, as well as nonprofit 501(c)3 organizations and schools offering arts programming. The Arts Council grants $20,000 - $25,000 each year, based on criteria established by the state.

From 1976 to 1996 the Christmas Country Store (CCS), under the auspices of the Crafts Guild of St. Mary's County, operated out of the Cecil's Country Store located in Great Mills, Maryland. Through the generosity of John Allan Cecil (who donated the property in 1975), the Historical Society and the Bicentennial Commission, the concept of an outlet for local artisans to sell their handmade works was realized. In 1977 the Crafts Guild made arrangements to lease the building on a year-round basis. The Crafts Guild and its membership contributed many volunteer hours repairing, cleaning, and preparing the store for public viewing, and earned a reputation for outstanding service and unique local crafts.
A new beginning in the old Hollywood post office was established in 1996 as the result of a lost lease in Great Mills, and the subsequent operation of the Christmas Country Store in the old Hollywood firehouse during 1998 - 1999 facilitated the growth of Crafts Guild membership. In 2000, the Crafts Guild relocated to Leonardtown and voted to change the store's name to reflect its new locale.
The reputation of a quality store with one-of-a-kind items started from these beginnings and continues today at Old Towne Crafters. Crafts Guild members give a 25% commission to defray overhead costs, pay a minimal space fee, and work part-time to run the store.
