CSM Men's Soccer Team Repeats as Region XX Champs

The College of Southern Maryland's Men's Soccer Team finished the season 17-5 and repeated as Region XX champions. LA PLATA, Md. - Retaining the title of Region XX champions, the College of Southern Maryland men's soccer team advances this weekend to compete for the NJCAA Division I Mid-Atlantic District Men's Soccer Championship. With five returning players from last year's all-freshman team, the Hawks, 17-5 on the season, will meet Louisburg College, 14-1-3, on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 1 p.m. at Chesapeake College in Wye Mills, Md.

Earning its first-ever back-to-back Region XX championship, CSM's Men's Soccer team has two of the top scorers in the country in Brandon Gross (73 points) and Guil Costa (59 points). Gross and Costa were also named to the 2006 All-Conference First Team for the Maryland Junior College Conference; MDJUCO's All-Conference second team includes Jorge Lopez, Dan Heaney and Gabriel Portillo. Players named to the region's All-Tournament Team are Gross, Costa, Lopez, Heaney, Dan Funk and Cullen McKenzie.

"We are very proud of this group of young men and the coaches for competing at such a high level and representing CSM in such a positive way," said Michelle Ruble, assistant director, student life.

Ranked 12th in the pre-season National Junior College Athletic Association Division 1 soccer poll, CSM enters the Mid-Atlantic District competition after clinching its regional title last weekend against CCBC-Essex, winning 2-1. "The way we came together and worked as a family really impressed me. We had lost to Essex earlier in the season, but we were able to put that behind us, and work together as one unit. That's the reason we won," said Head Coach Tony Galeano.

Playing for the Hawks this season are returners Jorge Lopez of Woodbridge, Va. (Gar-Field Senior High School); Cullen McKenzie of Woodbridge, Va. (Osborne Park High School); Daniel Heaney of Owings (St. Mary's Ryken High School); David Hupp of La Plata (La Plata High School); and Stewart Duque of La Plata (La Plata High School); and freshmen Bobby Slater of Clinton (Camp Springs Christian); Dominique Washington of King George (King George High School); James Evans of Waldorf (Thomas Stone High School); AJ Sweeney of Huntingtown (Huntingtown High School); Taylor Lewis of Leonardtown (Leonardtown High School): James Ritchie of Waldorf (Thomas Stone High School); Guil Costa of Fairfax, Va. (Lake Braddock High School); Gabriel Portillo of Springfield, Va. (Lake Braddock High School); Brandon Jamieson of La Plata (McDonough High School); Sheldon Neuberger of Mechanicsville (Churchville Academy); Dan Funk of Waldorf (McDonough High School); Justin Daniels of King George, Va. (King George High School); Cody Morgan of Port Tobacco (McDonough High School); Hussein El Sayed of White Plains (McDonough High School); Mike Carnucci of Huntingtown (Huntingtown High School); Matt Davis of Waldorf (Lackey High School); Adam Chase of Owings (Northern High School); Brandon Gross of Pomfret (McDonough High School); and Hassan El Sayed of White Plains (McDonough High School).

CSM alum and a former Hawk as well, Galeano is in his fifth season as head coach of the Hawks and has been selected as Coach of the Year during three seasons.
