Commissioners Break Ground for New VanGO Transfer Pavilion

On Wednesday, April 17, the Charles County Commissioners celebrated the groundbreaking for what will soon be a new VanGO Transfer Pavilion. The pavilion will be located at the VanGO Park-and-Ride lot at the corner of Smallwood Drive and U.S. Route 301 in Waldorf. This new transfer pavilion will allow all VanGO buses to stage at the same time, and will separate local transit from commuter bus operations. This project involves constructing an information office with restroom facilities for bus drivers along with additional trash receptacles, security cameras and increased street lighting. The estimated project completion date is July, 30, 2013.

Abney Promoted to Health Officer for Charles County

The Charles County Commissioners and the Charles County Department of Health are pleased to announce the appointment of Dianna E. Abney, M.D., as health officer for Charles County effective Wednesday, April 17. Dr. Abney worked previously at the Department of Health as the deputy health officer and also as medical director of the Child Abuse and Neglect program. In December 2012, Dr. Abney became acting health officer for Charles County.

"It is an honor and privilege to be appointed health officer for Charles County. This position provides me with a stronger and more stable foundation from which to serve the department and the county." said Dr. Abney. "During my 'acting' capacity, I had the opportunity to assess the health needs of the county. I look forward to working with the community, local government and the health department staff to optimize the health of all citizens of Charles County," she added.

Commissioner President Candice Quinn Kelly said, "I look forward to a smooth transition with someone as capable and respected as Dr. Dianna Abney. It is a pleasure to welcome her as the new health officer for Charles County."

"I'm delighted to have an outstanding, accomplished doctor directing our Health Department. All of us in Charles County are fortunate to have her knowledge and experience. The citizens will be the beneficiaries of her leadership, and I warmly welcome her," said Commissioner Vice President Reuben B. Collins, II (District 3).

Dr. Abney is a pediatrician who has been in practice for more than 20 years in Waldorf. She received her undergraduate degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983 and her medical degree from Tulane University in 1989.

"Dr. Abney brings a passion and commitment to the position. She has taken care of so many of our children as she is almost legendary in Charles County as a pediatrician," said Commissioner Ken Robinson (District 1).

"Dr. Abney is highly respected in the field of health care. Through her profession as a Doctor of Pediatrics in our community, she has cared for thousands of our children with love and a true concern for their welfare. I know she will bring that same compassion to all of those served by the Charles County Health Department," said Commissioner Debra M. Davis, Esq. (District 2).

Commissioner Bobby Rucci (District 4) said, "I'm pleased to welcome Dr. Abney, and I look forward to supporting her efforts as she begins her service in our Health Department. We could not have a more qualified or compassionate leader."
