Charles County Public Schools honored 2,153 seniors on June 6 and June 7 during graduation ceremonies for six high schools. Students in the class of 2011 were offered nearly $40 million in scholarships. Valedictorians and Salutatorians for the Class of 2011 are, from left: Joshua Boyd, Henry E. LA PLATA, Md. (June 9, 2011) -- Charles County Public Schools honored 2,153 seniors on June 6 and June 7 during graduation ceremonies for six high schools. Students in the Class of 2011 were offered nearly $40 million in scholarships.

Valedictorians and salutatorians were announced last week at awards ceremonies. These positions are determined by students’ grade point averages and represent the top academic achievers at each school.

Henry E. Lackey High School’s valedictorian is Andrew Bode of Nanjemoy and the salutatorian is Joshua Boyd of Indian Head. Bode plans to attend Mississippi State University, where he will study mechanical engineering. Boyd will attend the University of Maryland Baltimore County and major in biology.

La Plata High School’s valedictorian is Colin Qualters of La Plata and salutatorian is Katherine Huber, also of La Plata. Qualters plans to attend the University of Maryland College Park and major in chemical engineering. Huber is headed to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she will major in biochemistry.

Ross Gardiner of La Plata is Maurice J. McDonough High School’s valedictorian, and Melissa Bortner of Waldorf is salutatorian. Gardiner plans to study political science at Marshall University in the fall. Bortner will major in intercultural studies at Houghton College.

North Point High School has two co-valedictorians – Erin Chapman of Waldorf and Nicholas Teleky, also of Waldorf. Salutatorian is Audrey Springer of Waldorf. Teleky plans to attend Tufts University and major in computer science, music and pre-law. Chapman will attend Georgetown University in the fall to study biology. Springer plans to double major in chemistry and music at Messiah College.

Representing Thomas Stone High School are Jennifer DeMarco of Waldorf as valedictorian and Emily Le of Waldorf as salutatorian. DeMarco will attend Providence College and plans to study psychology or biology. Le has not declared a major, but will attend the University of Maryland College Park in the fall.

Westlake High School’s valedictorian is Asia Lamar of Waldorf and salutatorian is Brittany Sewell, also of Waldorf. Lamar plans to major in Spanish at the University of Maryland College Park. Sewell will attend Howard University in the fall and plans to study nursing.

-- Total scholarship money offered: $2,320,000

Westlake High School

-- Total scholarship money offered: $4,870,871

-- Total graduates: 2,153 (graduation totals include 15 students who were honored during graduation ceremonies with the Maryland High School Certificate, which is awarded to special education students who cannot meet the requirements for a diploma but who have met standards for the certificate)
