Southern Maryland's Vanishing Landscapes to Appear at CalvART Gallery

Posted on October 03, 2006:
Special Art Exhibit to be Held October 10 through November 5, 2006

Opening Reception Saturday, October 14, 2006 5pm-8pm

Prince Frederick, Md. - October 3, 2006 - The tobacco barns, farm fields and historic sites, along with workboats and watermen on the rivers and Bay, are fading scenes in Southern Maryland. It is through organizations such as the American Chestnut Land Trust, Calvert Farmland Trust, Historical Society of Calvert County and the Southern Maryland Heritage Consortium that much of the open space, historic sites and cultural heritage of Calvert County have been preserved.

Now, CalvART Gallery in Prince Frederick is honored to partner with these organizations to bring attention to the loss of farmland, open space, landmarks of historical significance and Southern Maryland's cultural heritage.

On Saturday, October 14, CalvART Gallery will host the opening reception of "Vanishing Landscapes" depicting the vanishing landscapes of Southern Maryland. More than 20 gallery artists will use their individual talents to highlight the landscapes and sites that are worthy of preservation in this unique art show that will be on display from October 10 through November 5. It is our way of preserving the vanishing landscapes of Maryland - one artwork at a time.

The visual arts have always been an important part of life in Southern Maryland as evidenced by pottery and paintings from historical properties throughout the region. Today there is a thriving arts community that supports three galleries in Prince Frederick and many others in neighboring towns on both sides of the Patuxent.

The CalvART Gallery was founded in June 2005 and is sponsored by the Arts Council of Calvert County, a non-profit organization. CalvART Gallery is located in the Prince Frederick Center, at 110 S. Solomons Island Road, Prince Frederick, Md., at the intersection of Rt. 231 and Rt. 4. For more information about the Gallery or "Vanishing Landscapes" show, please call 410-535-9252 or contact the event chair, Mimi Little, at mimil@olg.com.
