Support Memory of Fallen Fire, Rescue & EMS Members

Posted on March 08, 2005:

Senator Dyson The local fire, rescue and EMS squads that I represent in the General Assembly are kind enough to send me an invitation to their annual installation of officers and awards banquets every year. I try to make as many of them I can. I donít do this for political reasons. I do it to remind them how appreciative I am of their volunteer service to all of those they serve.

These men and women do an invaluable service that often goes unnoticed.

That is why I am co-sponsoring Senate Bill 974 which will allocate $200,000 towards the Maryland Fire-Rescue Services Memorial. This memorial will commemorate all of the brave fire, rescue and EMS personnel who have lost their lives in the line of duty. I canít think of a more fitting memorial and place for it to be located.

It is ironic that the memorial will be across the street from the Goldstein Treasury Building in Annapolis where the Louis L. Goldstein statue stands. I say ironic because Louis was a life-long supporter of our fire and rescue squads throughout our state. In fact, he was a founding member of the Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Department and served as an honorary member of the department until the day he died.

Louis recognized and supported the importance of the men and women who lend their service every day to ensure our safety.

Our volunteer fire and rescue personnel put their lives on the line every day to protect our families, friends and property from devastating fires, accidents, health emergencies and so much more. Because I recognize the significance fo the work these fine public servants do, I was pleased to purchase a memorial brick to support this project.

Unfortunately, the Maryland Fire-Rescue Services Memorial Foundation is struggling to fund the rest of the memorial -- the only one in the state to recognize all of our fallen fire and rescue personnel. That is why I am encouraging those who appreciate the efforts of our volunteer fire, rescue and EMS members to contribute to this most appropriate memorial -- the first memorial people will see as they approach our great Statehouse -- the oldest in the nation -- in the near-distance.

If you wish to contribute, please make your donation out to the Maryland-Fire Rescue Service Memorial Foundation; P.O. Box 706; Annapolis, MD 21401 or you can call (410) 459-0137 for more details.
