Little known government service could save you money, your life

Posted on July 29, 2004:

Senator Dyson Whenever major products are “recalled” for safety reasons such as automobiles with major defects or tires, it makes big news and costs corporations millions, if not billions of dollars.

But those incidents make the news only because they involve high level companies and products.

Little do people know that there are thousands of products that you may own or have in your possession that have been recalled by their manufacturers. To make consumers more aware of the recall process, a website has been created that you can access to see if you do indeed own a product or are about to buy one that has been recalled.

This is not something to overlook. Imagine if your car has a lethal defect, or the prescription you’ve been taken is bad or the light fixture in your home is potentially a danger of burning down your home because it is defective.

The website is www.Recalls.gov and I was very impressed by it to say the least. It’s easy to navigate and very instructional. There are seven links you can visit on the website. They include consumer products, motor vehicles, boats, food, medicine, cosmetics and environmental products.

Under the automotive link, you can look up motor vehicle recalls, child safety seat recalls, motor vehicle equipment recalls, tire recalls, get monthly recall reports, school bus recalls or report a car, truck and/or vehicle equipment that you feel has a safety defect.

For instance, under consumer products, you can look up appliances, clothing, electronical/electrical goods, furniture, household products, children’s products, lighting, outdoor amenities and sports and exercise equipment.

There are links for specific recalls or if you are unsure there is a product search, product description search or company search.

My purpose is not to bash big corporations, but it is no secret that corporate America has had its share of scandals over the years. Presidential candidate Ralph Nader wouldn’t be giving his Republican and Democratic challengers jitters if he hadn’t made a household name of himself as a corporate crusader most notably getting the deadly Corvair recalled in the 1960s. Yes, he’s been around that long.

I believe it is absolutely essential that every consumer visit this site or for those who don’t have internet access, find a family member or friend who can help you find out if you are indeed in possession of something that needs to be recalled. If you have a product that is on that list, you have every right to have it replaced by a better, safer product by law.
