Posted on February 09, 2001:

Senator Dyson Maryland Senator Roy Dyson’s measure to give Maryland’s Public Service Commission authority to regularly inspect intrastate oil pipelines, Senate Bill 117, passed unanimously out of the Economic and Environmental Affairs Committee today.

Dyson said the bill’s passage is essential.

“Perhaps if a legislation like this were on the books last year we could have prevented the tremendous tragedy that occurred on Swanson’s Creek on April 7 [when more than 130,000 gallons of oil spilled from a ruptured piece of pipeline near the Chalk Point generating plant in Southern Prince George’s County],” Senator Dyson (D-Calvert, St. Mary’s) said.

The bill will next go to a vote in front of the full Senate where Senator Dyson expects easy passage. Lending their considerable political weight behind the bill are Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr., Senate Majority Leader and EEA Chairman Clarence Blount, EEA Vice Chair Paula Hollinger and four other sponsors.
