For many years, Calvert County did not employ a cash economy. Barter was an important method of exchange - eggs for salt and sugar, chickens for pork and beef, etc. World War II brought a shift to cash as the medium of exchange but agriculture continues to be a big part of the culture of Calvert County, Maryland. This informative website provides information on local farms, agricultural products available for sale, organizations and businesses that offer services to the farming community, and related news. The site is maintained by the Calvert County Department of Economic Development.

In 1972, the Maryland General Assembly approved legislation establishing the Maryland Department of Agriculture on the basis of agriculture's growing importance and impact to the economy of the state. A year later, the Maryland Department of Agriculture became a full fledged part of state operations. Many activities of the MDA are regulatory in nature, others are assigned to a category of public service and some are educational or promotional in scope. All are intended to provide the maximum protection possible for the consumer as well as promote the economic well-being of farmers, food and fiber processors and businesses engaged in agricultural related operations.

Southern Maryland Trails provides a lovely guidebook that allows both natives and visitors to the area to explore and enjoy southern Maryland's natural and cultural treasures. The guidebook offers you two different themed tours: the "Fossils and Farmscapes Ramble" or the "Barnwood and Beach Glass Loop." Both tours offer the funseeker a wide array of farms; local artists & galleries; restaurants & eateries; and gardens, natural areas and praks with which to visit and enjoy. You can download the guide in PDF from the website or visit one of the many locations where you can pick up a free hardcopy.
The program was developed as a means to assist and promote farmers and related businesses as Southern Maryland diversifies and transitions away from its tobacco-dependent economy. The program is managed by the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission and the Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland.
