Event:  Asian Perspectives Symposium (free public event) SMCM

Time:  9:30 AM   Duration:  06:00 hours
Author:  Bradley Park
9:00 AM – 10:30 PM "Women and Politics in Indonesia: the Power to Confront or Conform," Nelly Van Doorn-Harder (Wake Forest University)

Abstract: By examining the development of democracy in Indonesia, Prof. Doorn-Harder will discuss how Islamist political parties have strategically placed women in high political positions in order to resist the activities of Muslim feminists and other groups against the national application of Islamic law.

11:00 AM - 12:30 PM "Bio-Lust: America's Biotech Juggernaut and its Japanese Critics," William LaFleur (University of Pennsylvania)

Abstract: This talk, illustrated with graphics, looks at why Japanese bioethicists have focused on an organ recipient’s desire for another person’s organs as an aperture for analyzing how our rapidly emerging new biotechnologies exacerbate our lust for a longer life, thus making our societies as societies, in some sense, less well. The growing gap between organs desired and organs available has led to serious proposals that body parts be legally bought and sold. In the view of many Japanese, any readiness to commodify ourselves to such a degree is itself a symptom of serious social illness.

12:30 PM - 1:45 PM Lunch Break

2:00 PM - 3:30 PM "Environments, Diversity and Equity: A Buddhist Perspective," Peter Hershock (East-West Center)

Abstract: In this talk, Dr Hershock will make use of Buddhist conceptual resources to consider how the processes of modernization, globalization, industrialization and marketization affect our lived environments. One of the insights afforded by this approach is that the issues of diversity loss that are at the center of concerns about human impacts on natural environmental systems are inseparable from issues of eroding diversity and equity in the social, economic, political and cultural spheres. Responding to such challenges as the looming crisis of climate change require a coordinated approach that is sensitive to the interdependence of the natural and the human and how climate change forces confrontation with an ongoing collision among globally dominant values that cannot sustainably addressed through techno-bureaucratic solutions alone.

Don't Miss out!! Community Yard Sale - Clothes, Furniture, knick knacks, household items, pictures, too much to list in one ad.

Last weekends sale was a big success. If you have items that you've been unsuccessfully trying to sell in your back yard, bring them out, set up a table, and start turning your items, into someone elses treasures.

Great deals for shoppers also. Everyone is welcome.

Anyone can reserve a space for $15.00 by calling Tina 240-577-0955.

This even has been very successful, because we have an established flow of traffic coming through the shopping center, and many people who wait just for us to have these community sales.

When: Saturday, November 14
Where: St. Mary's Square Shopping Center parking lot
Time: 7am - 1pm

Also, We are also looking for Crafters, Vendors, Musical Groups, and more to be a part of our Winter Festival that will be held on December 5th from 1pm - 6pm. You won't want to miss this event.

Time:  8 PM   Duration:  03:00 hours

Lush three-part harmonies, hot instrumental solos, and songs that celebrate nature are trademarks of Greentree, a contemporary folk group whose members include some of the best-known performers on the DC folk and Celtic-music scene. Carey Creed (vocals, acoustic guitar), Grace Griffith (vocals), and Jody Marshall (hammered dulcimer, harmony vocals) have each enjoyed rave reviews as artists in their own right. Add in the brilliant Dr. Paul Nahay on piano, and the result is a group whose enchanting sound you won't soon forget. Tickets available at the door and online! www.indianheadblackbox.org
