Outfitting Outlander: Costumes, Props, and Comparisons to Maryland Archaeology
For people who do historical archaeology for a living, the eye candy provided by the new Outlander series on Starz goes beyond attractive men in kilts and ladies in gowns. Period dramas often need to take creative license with sets and costumes in order to facilitate the filming process, and while these compromises can frustrate history buffs looking for a 100% realistic depiction of the past, Maryland’s artifacts prove that much of the material in Outlander is spot-on. This talk will explore how Outlander’s costumes and props compare to 18th-century artifacts recovered by archaeologists in Maryland such as table glass, medicine containers, horse tack, architecture, weaponry, clothing, and more.

Join Harmony Hall Chapter, NSDAR as we welcome Sara Rivers-Cofield of the
Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory.

Passatempo is pleased to announce our next Cineforum Italiano (Italian film screening) of The Legendary Giulia and Other Miracles (Noi e la Giulia) on Sunday, February 11, 2018, in Casa Italiana (595 ½ 3rd Street NW, Washington, DC) at 6:00 pm. Our films are in Italian with English subtitles.

This comedy is about a group of misfits who decide to go in on an “agroturismo” B&B (a sort of farm vacation) in an area controlled by a collection of bungling Camorra members. If they’d stopped to think about why the previous owners had quickly cleared out, they might have realized that this wasn’t such a great idea. $10 (at the door).

To learn more, please go to www.meetup.com/passatempo/events/246936708/.
