Do We Really Mean It?
For decades, our UU congregations have proudly proclaimed our welcome for everyone. Yet we still struggle to make good on that promise. After a year of upheaval and challenge, we are at a turning point. Rev. Manwell brings the story of one small congregation’s response, and a challenge.

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Chesapeake meets two Sundays a month at 10:30 am at the Yardley Hills Community Center, 700 Yardley Drive, Prince Frederick MD. Please visit our website: www.TheUUCC.org or call: (443) 646-3518 for information. All are welcome!

Chesapeake Choral Arts Society presents in concert: “A Child of Our Time”.
“A Child of Our Time” is an oratorio written by British Composer Sir Michael Tippett. This moving work was begun just after Britain entered World War II in 1939 and was completed in 1941.
The inspiration was the assassination of a German Official by a 17 year old Jewish boy and the resulting pogroms against the Jewish population.
It is as pertinent today as it was during the War as it emphasizes the experiences of the oppressed, with a pacifist message of understanding and reconciliation.
It is performed in a three part format similar to Handel’s Messiah and utilizes a narration in the form of recitatives. The work is anchored by beautiful arrangements of several African American spirituals including Steal Away and Deep River.
Concerts will be held at the College of Southern Maryland Fine Arts Building (8730 Mitchell Rd, La Plata) on Saturday, June 9th at 7:30pm and Sunday, June 10th at 3:30pm.
Tickets can be purchased on line at www.chesapeakechoral.com. Click on the poster of the concert and it will take you to the area to purchase tickets. Tickets will also be available at the door on the days of the concerts for the same price. Tickets are $15 for adults, and $12 for students, seniors, and military.
The Chesapeake Choral Arts Society is sponsored in part by grants from the Maryland State Arts Council and the Charles County Arts Alliance. Follow us on FaceBook.

On Sunday June 10, celebrated opera star Kevin Short will join with the Southern Maryland Youth Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Julien Benichou, in an exciting concert performance of operatic "greats" which will include music from Bizet's Carmen, Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, the Mephistopheles Arias from Gounod's Faust, and some beloved American spirituals.

Born and raised in Southern Maryland (Pomfret/Indian Head), Kevin is a Lackey High School and Morgan State University graduate, with advanced degrees in opera performance from the Curtis Institute of Music and Juilliard. In 1989, he won the bass-baritone award for the Middle Atlantic region Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, and from 1991-1998 he appeared annually at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City where he sang many major operatic roles and appeared in a total of 129 performances. Since then, he has performed in most of the major opera houses in the United States and made numerous international appearances. In the past year, he has held a Visiting Faculty position in the Voice/Opera division of the University of Maryland School of Music.

Please help us welcome Kevin back to Southern Maryland for this very special home-town performance! (Suggested donation at the door: $10 adults/$5 seniors, children, military, teachers).
