Dean Newman is an avid wildlife photographer living in the California, MD, area. He began a long love affair with the camera upon joining the Navy and attending the Naval Schools of Photography specializing in photojournalism in 1975.

As an avid birder, Dean amassed a North American life list of over 500 sightings and decided a new challenge was necessary. So, in 2004, after a 21-year absence, he returned to the camera to find the field had changed significantly from the old film days. Beginning with a Canon EOS 20D and the venerable 100-400 push-pull f/5.6 lens he set out to build a new life list by only counting birds he photographed.

Along the way he was introduced to master bird photographer, Art Morris, who spent time showing Dean how to improve his images. Through multiple bird photo gurus, including Alan Murphy, Matthew Studebaker, Jess Findley, Glenn Bartley, just to name a few, Dean realized he wanted to do much more than just document sightings. He wanted to make art.

Today, Dean's goal, in making images is more than just showing a "bird on a stick". He wants every photo he makes to reveal some aspect of the bird's natural history, environment or behavior. He wants people, as the dominant species on this planet, to realize there's beauty, drama and, yes, even death just outside their front door. All anyone has to do to see and make the images he portrays is turn off the TV or remove the ear buds.
