MedStar St. Mary's Hospital will be hosting a Diabetes Alert Day Tuesday, March, 22 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Health Connections Meeting Rooms A and B, located on the second floor of the hospital's Outpatient Pavilion.

"We are hoping to make people aware that you can have this scary disease and not even know you have it," said Tina Leap, CDE, RN, diabetes educator. Approximately 8 million Americans have diabetes and are undiagnosed, according to the American Diabetes Association. Approximately 29 million Americans, or 9 percent of the population, live with diabetes.

Those who attend the event can receive free blood glucose screenings and participate in risk assessment testing. Education about pre-diabetes will also be offered and tips on how to prevent diabetes will be available.

Diabetes educators and a registered dietician will be on hand to answer questions as well as to discuss diabetes classes and services offered through Health Connections, MedStar St. Mary's Hospital's community outreach department.

No appointment is necessary and all events are free of charge.

For more information visit MedStarStMarys.org or call Health Connections at 301-475-6019.
